Trump says arrest of Mahmoud Khalil is first of many in administration’s campaign to dismantle what it calls extreme leftist ideology on U.S. campuses.

Protesters say they are antiwar and not antisemitic. First-amendment advocates voiced concern over the arrest. Brian Hauss of the American Civil Liberties Union said the administration hasn’t pointed to any national-security concerns beyond Khalil’s activities related to political speech. “Citing national security does not give the Trump administration a blank check to violate Americans’ first amendment rights,” Hauss said.
